Redistricting Updates

Redistricting Updates

Iowa has now received its 2020 Census data. The Legislative Service Agency is currently analyzing it to create the first round of legislative maps. They expect to complete that process by mid-September, at which time the state’s Redistricting Commission must have a public review process with hearings on September 21, 22, and 23. After that, the legislature will meet for a special session in early October. At that session they will vote yes or no on the first set of maps. If they vote no, a second set will be drafted for voting. If those are voted down also, the legislature can draw its own maps. This has not occurred since Iowa instituting its current system in 1962. Community College Districts will be drawn in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Education after legislative and school district boundaries have been established.
