Week 3 at the Iowa Legislature was very busy with a major piece of legislation passing in the early morning hours of Tuesday. The bill, a major priority of Governor Reynolds, was signed into law Tuesday and creates Education Savings Accounts that provide funds for parents to send their children to private K-12 schools. The bill also included a provision that extends K-12 shared operational funding for another 10 years. Following the passage of this bill, lots of other legislation has dropped and many discussions have started on everything from property taxes to protections for pregnant students. We are monitoring everything closely and working with legislators and staff. Please review the bill tracker carefully to see if there is anything about which you have significant concerns. We did register this week in favor of SSB1076, which changes the graduation requirements for K-12, creating more flexibility with concurrent enrollment and other collaborations.
