CCforIowa's New Hire: Welcome Katrina Callahan

Katrina (Kat) Callahan is a South Dakota native where her passion for law and politics began. She interned at a law firm in high school and realized this was the path for her. She attended the University of South Dakota where she majored in political science, with a minor in economics. During her time here, she helped conduct voter registration drives on campus and had the opportunity to intern for the South Dakota House Majority Leader during the 2020 session. She started becoming interested in more education-related issues, which helped drive her honors thesis: Civic Education in South Dakota K-12 Schools: The Effect on Students from K-12 to Adulthood. Upon graduation, she began school at Drake Law to earn her juris doctor, with a certificate in Legislative Practice. She interned for various policy organizations, an Iowa House Representative, and even the Secretary of State's Office. Luckily, she found an internship that perfectly aligned with her interest in education and began interning at Community Colleges for Iowa (CCforIowa) in January 2023 working on legislative and policy issues. In the last few months, she has managed our bill tracking, supported research, responded to information requests, and created valuable content for our website. Kat will continue with us part-time throughout the next several months as she completes her final year at Drake Law School and focuses on taking the bar exam. On August 1, 2023, she will join us full-time as a Policy and Government Relations Specialist. This is a new position for the association that will focus on supporting overall advocacy efforts and the development of advocacy materials, bill tracking, and report development, coordinating with community college stakeholders, researching, and facilitating the dissemination of information on advocacy efforts, including research briefs, issue guides, and model policy.

"Getting to know all of the various stakeholders within the organization has been a privilege, and I can't wait to get to know everyone better and work to strengthen Iowa's Community Colleges in my new role," said Callahan.

Please join us in giving her a warm welcome to the team! She can be reached via email at kcallahan@ccforiowa.org
