Introduction from Executive Director, Emily Shields

Hello and welcome to week two of the Iowa Legislature! This one was relatively quiet with little substantial movement. The Legislative Services Agency presented their analysis of the governor’s education budget to the House Education Budget Subcommittee. You can find that analysis here along with other budget analyses. IACCT will be presenting to this subcommittee on February 9th at 9 am. We will send out the link so you can watch online. The governor also released her education omnibus bill, which you can find here. While primarily focused on K-12, it is worth a look. To give you a sense of the session timeline, there are 110 days in the session, and the 110th day falls on April 30. The first funnel lands on Friday, March 5 (the date by which bills need to be voted out of a House or Senate Committee to stay alive). The second funnel (the deadline for bills to be voted out of one chamber and out of committee in the other chamber to survive) lands on April 2.

Don’t forget to have your students register for next week’s Legislative Seminar! We hope to see a good online turnout.

Also, please check out the info we have on the IACCT website about our grassroots effort in contacting our legislators.
