I want to feel accomplished and refreshed after a day of work. Seeing the change I am committing my life to is what matters to me." Jaquelyn enjoys many hobbies and can most often be found diving into the world of books. She loves to travel and search for local coffee shops, bookstores, and jewelry stores, as well as hiking, kayaking, and camping. KCC_OgstonOlivia Ogston

I am from Marshalltown, Iowa. I am studying in the Culinary Arts Program. I just graduated in December and I will be studying abroad to Italy in June to learn from the Italian chefs there. My dream is to open up a Cafe back in my hometown of Marshalltown. I plan on using the skills that I have learned in school and the ones that I will learn in Italy this summer to make this cafe one-of-a-kind, bringing inspiration from the Italian pastries as well as offering a farm-to-table style of lunch. One of my favorite memories from being a student at Kirkwood was the support from my chefs and faculty. Through their help and guidance, my confidence has grown and given me experiences that I would not have been able to be a part of without them. One of these experiences is being chosen to participate in the culinary competition team. My partner and I developed a menu together and then brought that to the Pork Producers Competition in Des Moines as well as served it to all of the students and staff at Kirkwood through The Cafe. These opportunities have helped shape who I am today and I am so excited to see what comes next!

Outside of academics, I have a strong interest in fitness, which helps me maintain both physical and mental well-being. I am excited about the future and grateful for the experiences and connections I have made at Kirkwood.

KCC_WeiYixiang Wei

I am from Indonesia. This is my fourth semester at Kirkwood before I finish my Business Administration program. My future plans are to graduate from the University of Iowa and finally fully immerse myself in the entrepreneurial world. I’m a dreamer so I may sound unrealistic and naive, but only by giving my all, mind and soul, will I ever get closer to my naive dreams and goals of making lots of money, experiencing all sorts of things and having all sorts of things. Kirkwood has been a fresh new experience for me. It’s a comfortable environment where everyone, students, faculty members and teachers, are all welcoming and caring. Countless times has the community’s warmth helped me through dark times, when I still wasn’t used to college life. What makes my time at Kirkwood special are the connections I made with the people here, especially my dearest friends. Attending Kirkwood Community College has made me who I am today; I wouldn’t want to change anything if I were to start all over as a freshman.

Des Moines Area Community College

DMACC_BenitezConcepcionDaniella Benitez Concepcion

I plan to major in Civil Engineering when I transfer to a 4-year school. My goal is to become a civil engineer focused on designing structures that are not only functional but also visually inspiring and harmonious with the environment. I believe that good design blends creativity with purpose, shaping cities that are both efficient and beautiful. While at DMACC, I have been involved in Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), participating in events and service projects. I have also worked on independent studies related to civil engineering, coding, and data analysis. Additionally, I have taken part in leadership activities, collaborating on projects that required teamwork and problem-solving, and contributed to community service projects to support and improve our local area. My academic efforts have earned me recognition on the Dean’s List, PTK membership, and the honor of being recognized as an Outstanding Student Leader from the Tau Phi Chapter. These achievements also led me to participate in an internship at Iowa State University with the TRAC program, where I gained hands-on experience in cutting-edge engineering technologies. A verse that inspires me is Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” This reminds me to always give my best in everything I do.

John hopes to give his own ideas life through writing and continue on the legacy of his father’s written stories as well; one of his favorite quotes comes from his late father’s book. “Home isn’t the place where you come from; it isn’t the place that’s most comfortable or even the place where you know the most people. Home is the place where you go when you have a choice, wherever that happens to be, and regardless of what anyone else thinks about it.” John has found his home in movies and animation, where he can contribute his talents to inspire and uplift people through Movies, TV, and animation.

DMACC_DiazAlba Diaz

Hi everyone! I’m a Transfer Honoree, and I’m excited to continue my education at Iowa State University, where I plan to earn my Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. During my time at DMACC, I’ve been involved in Phi Theta Kappa, and I’ve also participated in the International Club. These experiences have helped me grow both personally and academically. While at DMACC, I’ve also earned The Ankeny Campus Scholarship and be named to the Dean’s List for my academic performance during the Fall of 2023 and Spring of 2024. One fun fact about me is that I can solve a 3x3 Rubik's cube and Spanish is my first language. One of my favorite quotes is by Bruce Lee: ""Use your difficulties as opportunities."" This quote reflects the mindset of using adversity as a tool for growth and success.

DMACC_EngleAllison Engle

DMACC_ForknerDanielle Forkner

Upon transferring to Drake University, I intend to get my bachelor's degree in business and continue at Drake’s law school. In the foreseeable future I will be a lawyer in a court room. Criminal law and Business law are both options. Having an LLC in the past I am highly interested in the functionality of Business, but I am not settled on one or the other. Currently I am the President of Phi Theta Kappa Beta Delta Psi, the President of DMACC Student Honors Advisory Board, the Vice President of DMACC Future Business Leaders of America, an officer in the parent’s club, a member of Student Activities Council, and a member of the Urban game guild. While at DMACC I have been on the President’s list, and the Dean’s list. I placed 1st at state and 8th at Nationals in Orlando Florida for my community service project though FBLA. I was chosen to speak at the Annual Community College Tradeshow Convention at the Marriot downtown. The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. I have been though some dark years, and I am proud to be blossoming into the woman that I was destined to be. My son and I tell each other every day before we both head off to school to “be a light in the darkness”. The world is consumed with negativity, and he continues to be the sun in my life, and we want to shine our light wherever we go.

DMACC_Geberab
Yafet Geberab

My name is Yafet Geberab, and I am from a small country in East Africa called Eritrea. I am a sophomore at DMACC, and my current major is Business Transfer. I plan on transferring to Iowa State University next fall to major in Management Information Systems. Once I graduate, I hope to work as a business analyst or data analyst. Later in my career, I would like to own a residential home business for people with intellectual disabilities where I provide support and housing, as I currently work as a direct support professional. During my time at DMACC, I have participated in Club West, where I was able to create an event, "National Pizza Day," where I handed out pizza to students. While at DMACC, I received recognition for Dean's List of Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Summer 2024, and Fall 2024.
A little bit about me is that I was a refugee in Ethiopia for four years. The living conditions were horrible, but my family and I were able to overcome the hardship. Then, once we arrived in the United States, assimilating to the culture wasn't easy. When I started school in 7th grade, I was bullied for my inability to speak English and for wearing baggy clothes because, during that time we weren't able to afford new clothes. All the clothes that I had were from a donation center. I was grateful because I had clothes and shoes, but the reality was completely different from what I had imagined. Throughout middle school, the bullying continued. There were times when I had suicidal thoughts, but all of that changed once I reached high school. I was able to find really good friends who helped me forget my past hardships. One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Nelson Mandela: "It always seems impossible until it's done." I had never imagined being where I am now, but I am grateful to my family and friends for supporting me through the hardships and good times.

DMACC_GoodTyler Good

I am honored to be recognized with this award while pursuing my passion of Computer Science at DMACC. My goal after I graduate is to build a strong career either developing software or websites. During my time at DMACC, I have received the Iowa Last Dollar Scholarship and the DMACC Foundation Scholarship, which have helped support my academic journey. Additionally, I was proud to earn the Dean's and President's list during high school. A quote that inspires me and guides my approach to challenges is, ""Every locked door has a key."" This reminds me to stay determined and creative in overcoming obstacles, both in my studies and in life.

DMACC_GuzmanMargarita Guzman

Returning to college in my 30's has been a rollercoaster of emotions with some hardships along the way, such as my boyfriend undergoing open heart surgery during my first semester. But my goals and ambition have never faltered. For years I have been able to climb up the corporate ladder in healthcare, but I finally hit my glass ceiling. Without a degree or addition to my skillset I would not be able to go further, at least without difficulties. The Last Dollar Scholarship was my saving grace and pushed me to return to college. With my CIS AAS degree in sight, I plan to either return to the healthcare industry or pursue IT through my current employment. During my time here at DMACC I have been consistently on the President’s list. I have participated in the Honors program by helping to advocate for suicide awareness and prevention and assisting Pamela’s Pantry by creating quick guides for volunteers. I also volunteer at Pamela’s Pantry any time they email me for assistance. This semester I am actively participating in the honors advisory board and PTK urban. I will also be working on the AACC’s Community College Innovation Challenge with other honors students. My favorite quote is “Work smarter not harder” and I am constantly trying to live by it. A fun fact about me is I can read/write music, play flute, and love to draw. Although I’m a bit rusty from not having time to play flute as much as I like.

DMACC_JaurenaGuizarJose Jaurena Guizar

José Antonio Jaurena Guízar, better known as “Tony Guízar”, is an international student at DMACC's Ankeny campus. Born on October 13, 2004, in Guadalajara, Mexico, Tony was always an energetic, extroverted, and curious child. His interest in learning about his surroundings led him to eventually choose Mechanical Engineering as his major. Looking forward to transferring to Iowa State University in Fall 2025, he is a student who is deeply involved in his academic community. He has served on the Student Activities Council as a board member, on PTK as the Vice President of Scholarships, as STEM Club’s Vice President for two terms, and for almost four terms, as the International Student Club’s President. Externally, he has volunteered at Meals from the Heartland on Sundays for over a year, and at a dog shelter along with his family, which has resulted in him living with seven happy dogs and one grumpy cat. Along with his current nomination for PTK’s All-State Academic Team Award, he has been previously nominated for the Dean’s List and President’s List award, DMACC Honors Tuition Award, LSAMP ILAC Award, PTK Outstanding Leader Award and the SAC’s Recognition Award. However, he seeks to complete an achievement that transcends all of these accomplishments: to create a method of mass transportation that through alternative fuels, highly aeronautical design and engineered lightweight materials, can be economical for its users and have a positive impact on the environment. This, to reduce individual transportation, traffic, and the stigma of public transportation. “Semper Altius”

Her work on the family farm has played a significant role in shaping both her personal and professional aspirations. Her favorite quote is “Lead with grace,” a phrase shared by her former band instructor.

Pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, I plan to transfer to Iowa State University to continue my education with the goal of working in conservation for a federal agency. During my time at DMACC, I have been involved in Phi Theta Kappa, conducted an independent research study on water quality, have been a manager for the DMACC Women’s Basketball Team, and participated in an NSF-funded REU internship working with the Conservation Reserve Program. While at DMACC, I have been recognized as the NCHC Student of the Year at a Two-Year Institution, named to the DMACC President’s List, and have been awarded an Iowa Space Grant Consortium STEM Research Scholarship. A fun fact about me is that I grew up on a farm, which sparked my passion for the environment, helping shape my career goal of working in conservation.

Getting into the 2025 PTK All Iowa Academic Team has made me reflect on my educational journey, a goal I have often doubted whether to keep or abandon. As I was born and raised in a place where education was a significant challenge, my dream has often felt overwhelming. I plan to transfer to Iowa State University with a Food Science and Technology under the Agriculture department after completing my associate degree and Biotechnology certificate. My intention in Food Science is to be involved in solving the World’s provisions sufficiency projects. I appreciated the Honor program for allowing me to hand in the research project ahead of my regular timeline and community service project to learn and systematically contribute to the community. As I am interested in Food Safety in Underserved Areas, I tested my hypothesis of bacteria reaction to antimicrobial foods, and that way, my future research could have a foundation of food safety in such areas by using existing products or natural resources without advanced technology. I enjoy contributing to the environment around me. As a Student Activities Council member at DMACC, I got a chance to be involved in the Regional Conference of Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities in Chicago in Fall 2023. This opportunity gave me to learn about personal development, campus contributions, and activities management. My commitments to campus contributions are noticeable in my active participation in the Student Activities Council with the responsibility of assisting students, the STEM clubs to help peers like me, the International Student Association to assist and stay connected with international students, the Student Honors Advisory Board, and Data Analysis Club with the role of Vice-president. My load for education is partially lifted because of the DMACC foundation scholarship, Honors program, and PTK. I always get left behind in classes because of being bilingual, which makes me feel like I am a slow runner, but I know that I never stop to get to my goals until I achieve them.

I am a psychology major. When transferring, I wish to continue pursuing Psychology and getting my PhD in psychology. I want to become a psychoanalyst and be a therapist, whether it is one-on-one with a patient or couples therapy. While at DMACC, I have actively participated in PTK; I am a Chapter Officer and Vice President of Leadership. I helped direct a college project teaching cultural information to about a hundred people, mostly kids, and I helped direct an initiation event for PTK members. I have received a Drake University Phi Theta Kappa award. At first, I didn't want to study anything after high school, but I have always been someone who wanted to know more about the hidden aspects of life, one being our minds and behaviors. Regardless, I knew that I should have some sort of degree, so I planned on and started studying business management to take over my father's restaurants, as everyone expected of me. I often caught myself studying psychology on YouTube or with my uncle, a psychoanalyst. What most stopped me from pursuing psychology in the first place was the amount of time I needed to study for the degree. However, I loved the environment at DMACC and one day; I watched the movie "Good Will Hunting." upon finishing the movie, I suddenly knew I was to pursue psychology no matter the amount of time it would take. I now know I made the best choice of my life. A quote that has stuck with me and has encouraged me to do more and to be more was one I saw in a series on Netflix, it went, "Great things don't happen in tiny little increments, great things happen when someone thinks completely different than everyone else."

I’m on the path to obtaining a bachelor of science in nursing. I aspire to become a doctorally-prepared psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and help those in my community who are putting up a fight against mental health every day and refuse to give up. I have not participated in any activities yet but plan to do so in the future. While at DMACC I have made it to the President’s list and the Dean’s list as well. Coming from someone who has to fight her way through everything in life, I can confidently say “The only limits we have are those we set for ourselves, if you can dream it, you can achieve it.”

I am transferring to Simpson College to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. My passion for sociology has grown with each course I’ve taken, inspiring me to build a career dedicated to helping others. I am currently exploring potential career paths as a Middle School Counselor or an Alcohol and Drug Counselor and am considering pursuing a master’s degree after completing my undergraduate studies at Simpson. During my time at DMACC, I actively participated in Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the TRIO program, both of which have been instrumental to my academic success. I am honored to have received several DMACC Foundation Scholarships, including the “DMACC CEO Golf Invitational Scholarship” and the “Urban Campus Scholarship.” Additionally, I have maintained a position on the DMACC President’s List for three consecutive semesters and am committed to achieving this distinction for my fourth semester as well. As a non-traditional student, I bring a unique perspective and life experience to my academic journey, and I truly believe this has been the ideal time in my life to pursue higher education. I am inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s words, “I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards,” as they reflect my perseverance and commitment to personal growth.

DMACC_OkoruwaImmaculate Okoruwa

I am a Computer Information Systems major at DMACC with a passion for using data to tackle real-world challenges and drive diversity and inclusion in the workplace. My goal is to become a data scientist, leveraging machine learning techniques acquired through the TechWise program, sponsored by Google, to create meaningful impact. At DMACC, I participated in a service project focused on raising awareness for suicide victims, attended career fairs, and worked on both independent and team programming projects. These experiences have deepened my understanding of community and collaboration. Additionally, as a digital skills instructor at the Evelyn K. Davis Center, I had the honor of teaching over 250 underserved individuals in the Des Moines community—helping them transition into clerical roles, giving a head start to those continuing their education, and assisting refugees and English learners in integrating into a tech-driven economy. My academic achievements have been recognized through honors such as the President’s List and the DMACC Foundation Scholarship, as well as for my community service efforts. A fun fact about me is my transition from a career in petroleum engineering to technology—one that has taught me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. I believe in the power of small beginnings, and my favorite quote reflects this mindset: ""Do not despise the days of small beginnings."" This philosophy fuels my determination to continue learning, grow in my career, and inspire others to do the same.

Currently, I am in the DMACC nursing program and plan to transfer to Iowa University to pursue my bachelors. Prior to starting the program, I thought I wanted to become an emergency department nurse, but after doing clinical and working as a patient care technician at Methodist hospital, it has altered my decision. I am still uncertain at this time because there are so many different pathways. I just enjoy working in patient care. In nursing school, there isn't a ton of extra time with the workload, so my main focus was participating in study groups and staying on top of homework. It has paid off because I have been on the President's List, and this past semester I was on the Dean's List. Another honor program I am in is The National Society of Leadership and Success. Right out of high school, I did not have a career pathway I wanted. I got my associates degree online, but since I didn't have a goal, I did not try as hard as I do now. After I got my AA, I just stayed working at the pharmacy for 4 years. I took up as many continuation learning programs through the pharmacy, such as, learning to give immunizations, fitting shoes for diabetics, becoming the lead technician, etc. I wanted to learn more and missed patient care (from a high school job). This made me realize I should go back to school, even though I thought I was too old to go back at 23 years old. I overcame that fear and started my prerequisites. I really enjoyed learning, and my fear was just a negative mindset and a roadblock. It turns out, there are lots of people of all ages. I am so glad I went back to continue with school. Knowing and picking out a career when you're only 18 is a big decision. I am thankful that I got more experience and education before starting and deciding my lifelong career.

During my time at DMACC, I embraced every opportunity for growth and exploration. I will now be pursuing a degree in Communications at Iowa State University, where I will continue to refine my skills while keeping my career path open to new possibilities. While at DMACC, I served as the Communications Officer for Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an experience that strengthened my leadership and communication abilities. Additionally, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in London, expanding my global perspective and adaptability. Academically, I was honored to make the Dean’s List and to receive the Dean’s and Provost’s Scholarships in recognition of my dedication to excellence. These achievements have reinforced my belief that hard work and perseverance open doors to new opportunities. A quote I live by is, “Everything happens for a reason.” This mindset has guided me through challenges and successes, reminding me that every experience contributes to my journey. I look forward to where this path will take me next!

DMACC_SotoGonzalezJoshua Soto-Gonzalez

The major I am planning to pursue upon transferring to my four-year institution is Biology with a pre-med focus. My career goal is to continue studying biology, earn my PhD in science, and conduct research. While completing my PhD, I hope to go to medical school and eventually become a medical doctor. While at DMACC, I have participated in many activities such as PTK activities. I am the VP of Membership and VP of Fellowship for the Urban PTK, as well as part of the Honors Team and a leader in the Student Honors Advisory Board (SHAB). I have also been on the President's List and Dean's List for my school. In addition, I am an alumnus of the Leadership Iowa University and have a certification for being part of the IINSPIRE program. My favorite quote is, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” This quote is important to me because, during challenging times, you may lose confidence due to mistakes or lack of opportunities. However, having the courage to continue is what truly matters. Whether facing discouragement or enjoying success, it's important to keep moving forward and determined for improvement. This quote inspires me to keep climbing the ladder to reach my goals.

DMACC_SureVeronica Sure

My name is Veronica Sure, and I am currently completing my business transfer program at DMACC. Upon graduating, I will continue my education at Drake University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting. I aspire to build a successful career in accounting, achieving financial stability while making a meaningful impact in my field. At DMACC, I have actively participated in Phi Theta Kappa as the Vice President of Leadership at the Urban Campus. I also attended the PTK Iowa Regional Conference, an incredible experience that helped me connect with like-minded individuals and broaden my perspective. These opportunities challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and helped me grow. I’ve consistently earned a place on the President’s List and received scholarships like the DMACC foundation scholarship, that eased my family’s financial burden and allowed me to focus on my goals. Achievements like these inspire me to keep striving for excellence. A fun fact about me is that I moved to the United States in 2023 after living in India for 20 years. This transition has been both challenging and rewarding, teaching me adaptability and deepening my bond with my family. During this journey, a bible scripture that has resonated deeply with me is from Jeremiah 29:11—“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Trusting in God’s plans has given me strength and peace during uncertain times. It reminds me that even when the path ahead is unclear, I am being guided toward a future filled with purpose and hope.

DMACC_VoellerTrey Voeller

Trey is excited to transfer to Iowa State University for a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural and Rural Policy Studies with a secondary degree in  International Agriculture following his DMACC graduation this May. Throughout his time at DMACC, Trey was an Agriculture Future of America College Ambassador, Salt Company connection group leader, and member of various leadership clubs. His Professional experiences include clerking in the House of Representatives, facilitating workshops for National FFA, working as a summer research assistant with Corteva Agriscience, coaching a 17u club volleyball team, and interning on the World Food Prize Foundation's Youth Programs and Partnerships team. His favorite Bible verse is 2 Corinthians 12:9: ""But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me.""

WITCC_FuentesDeLaCruzJose Fuentes De La Cruz

Hello, my name is Jose. I reside in Sioux City, Iowa and I am currently studying Robotics and Automation at WITCC. Since I was a child, I was influenced by my father to become an engineer, that is how I started to get interest in the engineering field. I grew up in Mexico under the care of my mother and grandparents. They taught me to be a better person by instilling in me the values of kindness, hard work, and perseverance. Their wisdom continues to guide me in everything I do. I moved to the US along with my family 3 years ago looking for a better life. It was challenging to adapt to a new culture, language, food, weather and not only that, but also leaving behind my grandparents, friends and pretty much my whole life in Mexico. However, I tried to give my best by getting good grades, and therefore, joined PTK, which has helped me a lot for the last 6 months. I don’t think I have ambitious dreams or goals, to be honest, I am someone who is only looking for happiness, and I think, PTK is the correct path for me to keep growing up.

I am on my way to Bellevue University to continue my education in legal studies, with a goal of becoming a paralegal.

Southwestern Community College

SWCC_AnsonDylan Anson

I'm finishing my second semester in my last year at Southwestern Community College. I'm on track to graduate with my AAS in Electrical Technology this spring. I'm proud to say I've done exceptionally well for myself, having never even wanted to go to college. In high school, my mentality was to do the bare minimum; I graduated with D's in many classes. Looking back on that, I never expected much of what resulted from my return to school. Our local Phi Theta Kappa chapter invited me to join PTK for academic excellence. I've made the dean's list every semester, and all the friends, colleagues, and experience I've gained by attending college have been a phenomenal boost to my life and career. I plan to finish my electrical apprenticeship over the next three years, get my class A journeyman license, work on new residential builds, or do commercial service work.

My name is Tijmen Nagel. I’m from Amsterdam, the Netherlands and have been living in Centerville, Iowa for almost three years now. I’m currently in my final year at Indian Hills Community College and a proud member of the Indian Hills Baseball team, coached by Coach Torrez. I am studying Arts and Sciences with a focus on International Business. This is my second year at Indian Hills due to a ‘redshirt’ in my first year. I plan to continue studying Business at a four-year university to enhance my knowledge and skills, ensuring I am well-prepared for my professional adult life. My goal is to work in the professional sports industry as a leader and guide for athletes and organizations. Since high school I have lived by my motto: “All will be well”. From an early age, I experienced several setbacks that shaped my resilient character. This motto has always helped me get back on my feet, keep going and become the person I am today. Without the support of my friends, teammates, and family, my life would have looked a lot different for me now. This motto is so important to me that I have it tattooed on my right leg in Italian: ‘andra sempre tutto bene”. It reminds me of who I am, where I am heading, and what I want in life. And finally, always keep going!
