Mykenah Pothoff
I’m attending Muscatine Community College to get my Associate of Arts degree and Registered Nursing license. I’m currently working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at a nursing home. One thing I wasn’t prepared for when being a Certified Nursing Assistant, was gaining so much love for so many lives. But sadly, the days of cracking jokes and laughter turn into sitting by their bedside tearing up well holding their hand until their last breath. Every one of my residents has made a huge impact on my life and they will be the reason I will push to be the best that I can be. My goal after getting my Registered Nursing license is to continue working in a skilled nursing facility or becoming a hospice nurse. My parents have been my biggest inspiration. They have taught me to be very appreciative, hardworking, and independent. A saying my dad has always said that will forever stick with me is, “Do what others aren’t willing to do and they’ll never have what you have.” I would like to thank my parents because without them I would not be where I am today.

For me, engineering is the driving force of my return to higher education. This spurs to life through curiosity and persists through a lifetime of determination. The balance of electrical coursework and the ability to lean into my aptitudes (programming) made the decision for me. I discussed my thoughts with my mentor and honors advisor, and it is not just exciting but quite logical. This is why the college of Electrical/Computer Engineering is a perfect fit for me. I plan to transfer to Iowa State University after my time at DMACC. As a 40-year-old returning student, I am more organized, and plan-oriented than I have ever been. I am focused and driven to achieve my goal of completing higher education. My course load is challenging; I have worked hard to get the best grades possible. I returned to school 4 semesters ago after leaving in 2007. In the time since I’ve been back, I have earned the Presidents’ List award twice and the Dean’s List once. Last summer, I was enrolled in full-time coursework as well as a full-time internship (40 hours a week). This internship, sponsored by the Department of Energy at Ames National Laboratory, was a data science workshop for energy solutions and machine learning. I consider this machine learning experience pivotal in my education. In fall 2023, I completed two DMACC Honors Projects, one for Calculus and the other for Chemistry where I applied what I learned at Ames Lab.

This goal is a stepping stone toward my long-term aspiration to become a mental health nurse practitioner. Beyond academics, I actively participate in community and leadership roles. I started a campus study group to foster collaborative learning and am a part of Optimists International, an organization dedicated to bringing out the best in youth, communities, and ourselves. I also have a love for the outdoors and penchant for puns, wordplay, riddles, logic puzzles, and strategy games.

I am involved with Phi Theta Kappa, Vice President of Service. My service involved contributing to our chapter's College projects and participating in PTK-related fundraisers. I am also involved with the Choir at Southwestern Community College which presents concerts for the community and nearby schools. Participating in a local church is a vital part of my college experience. We gather together several times each week. My faith in Christ is the center of my life and I am excited to talk about what God has been teaching me with other students. God has given me a desire to go into the ministry. I will begin the next chapter of my life at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA to pursue a pastoral studies degree. I hope to pastor a local church and spread the gospel. I thank God for the growth I have experienced at Southwestern and in Creston over the last two years. He has given me instructors and mentors who have impacted my life and set me on this path.
hallica warren-Anderson
My name is Hallica Warren-Anderson, I am 20 years old, and I’m from Alpha, Illinois. In my free time, I really enjoy cooking, crocheting, going to the gym, listening to music, reading at the lake, or playing games with my little sister. I am finishing my second year at Southwestern Community College. During my time at SWCC, I have been a volleyball team captain, served as the Phi Theta Kappa Vice President of Fellowship, competed in state level BPA testing and placed 2nd nationally, been a student ambassador, made it on the President’s Honors List every semester, and placed on the NJCAA All-Academic First Team. When I graduate in May, I will receive a General Business AA and a Business Administration AAS. My plans after SWCC are undecided, but I am looking to find a school in a warm climate that allows me to continue my business pursuits and potentially a volleyball career.
