Christi Schrodt is a dedicated member and officer of the PTK Beta Epsilon Pi chapter at Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, IA.  With a passion for creative writing, Christi aims to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor's degree in liberal arts with an emphasis in creative writing.  As a married mother of seven children, twelve birds, and many reptiles, and a grandmother of two, she has proven that it is never too late to reach for her goals and is proud to show her children that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.  Christi is a published author of four books and plans to revamp her book series by rewriting each book after graduation. She has been an active volunteer in her community for many years and during her time at NICC she has found a new passion for studying humanities, diversity, and multicultural settings. Christi would like to bring those topics to life in her writings by focusing on real stories of how everyday people can make a difference in the world and in people's lives. She believes that doing something small can get really big and there's so much good that people can do even if they do it in a small way. In her free time, Christi runs two homeschool groups, one for teenagers and one for all ages, not only to educate but also to provide socialization for children being taught at home.  She volunteers for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, the Alter and Rosary Society, as a member of the honor guard for catholic funerals, and as a catechist for seventh-grade religious education. She hopes one day to teach creative writing.

Kirkwood has given me not only education, but also courage and confidence for my future.

Des Moines Area Community College

Northeast Iowa Community College logoElizabeth Acheson

I am pursuing the Web Developer Full Stack AAS degree at DMACC. My career goal is to get a job as a Full Stack Web Developer where I am able to help a wide variety of clients. I hope to create effective websites that will improve the amount of business they get as well as help my clients to be able to focus on other parts of their business outside of their website. While going to DMACC part-time I have also been working part-time as a front office assistant at my Mom’s podiatry office. It is a goal of mine to find a good balance of work, school and personal life in order to keep myself from burning out. I enjoy hosting craft days with my friends and I am going to start volunteering at a non-profit second hand art store in February. I received the DMACC West Campus Scholarship award last year. I started taking DMACC classes the fall after I graduated in 2020 during Covid. I took online classes for a year but quickly realized I was unsure of what I wanted to study and what career path I wanted to pursue so I ended up taking a break. I just started taking classes again last spring semester. I really enjoyed the coding class I took last spring semester and it motivated me to start pursuing a Web Development degree. I am now more excited than ever to continue to learn and work towards a web development career.

Northeast Iowa Community College logoThae Aung

My name is Thae Aung. I am currently studying Liberal Arts at DMACC to transfer to Iowa State University (ISU). I intend to study Data Science or Data Analytics at ISU. My career goal for now is to become a data analyst in technology, finance, or retail. I am still discovering which area I should specialize in. One of my proudest moments at DMACC is being able to finish my first-ever Honors project with my instructor, Professor Anita Wood. Because of this established milestone, I am now more confident in carrying out another project for Spring 2026. I also appreciate getting the President’s List award and Honors Tuition reimbursement from DMACC. I also finished my first service-learning project under the guidance of Professor Julie Roosa. It was challenging for me, but I appreciate for the experience and the wonderful afternoon with my class and the people at Sunny View Care Center while playing “Snakes and Ladders”. The quote I always use to be grounded in current situations is “This too shall pass,” which is an ancient Persian proverb, retold by my Biology teacher at the high school. I like this quote because whether I am in favorable situations or I am distressed about something, I become more grounded when I realize everything is just temporary. This makes me focus more on what I can do in the present instead of living in the past or in the future.

Northeast Iowa Community College logoJulio Boanerges

She has balanced full-time coursework with raising two young children, an experience that has deeply shaped her commitment to student advocacy and resilience. Katie’s academic journey is also a personal one. Coming from a difficult upbringing, she returned to school as a mother determined to break generational cycles, prove to herself what she is capable and deserving of, and show her children that they can accomplish anything regardless of what others make them feel they can or cannot be. A quote she lives by is: “They said to her, you cannot withstand the storm. She whispered back, I am the storm.”

During my time at DMACC, I have been actively involved in the Honors Program, including completing an Honors Discipline course. I have been fortunate to receive several forms of recognition during my time at DMACC, including DMACC scholarships, placement on the President’s List and Dean’s List, acceptance into the DMACC Honors Program, and selection as a member of the All Iowa Academic Team. A fun fact about me is that I once overcame my fear of the ocean and became a certified scuba divemaster after spending six months in Cozumel, Mexico. It taught me an important lesson that I still live by today: it’s never too late to start something new.

These hands-on experiences have reinforced my commitment to using technical skills responsibly and effectively in the workforce. My academic recognitions include placement on the President’s List, being a two-time recipient of a DMACC Diversity Award through essay competition, and receiving the Kay L. I was named on the DMACC President’s List for my academic performance during the Spring and Summer of 2025 and on the DMACC Dean’s List for the Fall of 2024. I often look to this quote by actor Cheng Yi for inspiration: "The world is vast; there are many paths to take and many sights to see. One should not be confined to a single corner."

I will be going to Iowa State University and majoring in architecture. I hope to design performance spaces and integrating working with performance arts. I have participated in show choir crew, show band, concert band, two jazz bands, marching band, choir, stage managed several musicals and plays, speech, and FCCLA at my high school. I was an awardee of the CollegeBoard National Recognition Program for outstanding academic achievement, I've been on the DMACC Dean's List several times, and my co-stage manager and I received special recognition for our leadership and designing of the Van Meter production of Beauty and The Beast by the IHSMTA. My fun fact is that despite being a high school student, I am over 80% done with an AA.

My major is Kinesiology: Exercise Science. After DMACC my goal is to transfer to Iowa State in August to continue my career. After Iowa State, I want to become a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. DMACC has helped me not only educationally but also financially. With their DMACC Foundation Scholarships, I was able to explore different classes to help me find the perfect career for me. Going into college, I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to make a difference in kid's lives which is why being a Pediatric Occupational Therapist.

When I transfer to UNI, I'm going into Secondary Education: Mathematics. I plan on getting my Master's there (which will only take me four years, subtle flex). After I graduate, I'll move to Colorado and think about the slight chance of maybe possibly visiting for the holidays. In Colorado, I'll teach at a high school somewhere. I ran a clothing business when I was a freshman in high school. We had one customer.

I’m a Biology major on the Pre-Medical pathway and plan to pursue this major upon transferring to a four-year institution. My long-term goal is to attend medical school and become a physician. While I have not yet chosen a specific specialty, I’m strongly drawn to the surgical field. I also plan to minor in Psychology, as I’m deeply interested in understanding human behavior and mental health, and I hope to integrate psychological perspectives into my future medical career. During my time at DMACC, I currently serve as the Vice President of Scholarship for my Phi Theta Kappa chapter and participated in the 2024 PTK Catalyst, which strengthened my leadership and campus engagement. I also represented the student body on the DMACC Presidential Search Committee, contributing student perspectives to the selection process. As a member of the DMACC Honors Program, I collaborated with professors on advanced research projects beyond the classroom. In addition, I volunteer as an emergency department volunteer at UnityPoint Lutheran Hospital. I have earned recognition through consistent placement on the President’s List for all three semesters that I finished, and receiving the DMACC Foundation Scholarship for 2025 and 2026. I being awarded the PTK Global Leaders of Promise Scholarship. A quote that deeply resonates with me is “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure” from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, as overcoming this fear has been a recent central to my personal growth and academic journey.

Northeast Iowa Community College logoLy Nguyen

Hello, my name is Ly Nguyen, but I prefer to go by Daphne. My major is Psychology, transferring to Iowa State University for a bachelor's and eventually pursuing a PhD in forensic psychology at ISU. I've always been fascinated by how the human brain works and why people think, feel, and behave the way they do. With previous credits in paralegal studies, I discovered the powerful intersection of psychology and law, how understanding human behavior can serve justice by helping trauma victims, explaining criminal behavior, and assessing defendant's mental states. My goal is to become a forensic psychologist who bridges the gap between understanding human nature and applying that knowledge in courtrooms, correctional facilities, and law enforcement agencies. I want to make a meaningful impact at the intersection of psychology and justice. I am an active member of Phi Theta Kappa and The National Society of Leadership and Success, both of which have enriched my college experience and developed my leadership skills. I have earned Dean's List recognition for six consecutive semesters over two years, including summer terms, demonstrating my commitment to academic excellence. I am a bilingual Vietnamese-English speaker, which has given me a unique perspective on communication and cultural understanding, skills that will be invaluable in forensic psychology, where connecting with diverse populations is essential.

I plan on transferring to Iowa State University next fall I will switch to kinesiology premed. Upon graduation from Iowa State, I hope to join Des Moines University and partake in their DO program. I hope to one day own a family practice, caring for families and watching them grow and age. During my time at DMACC, I’ve participated in the in my boot 5K ruck/run, PTK, PTK catalyst, Honors, fitness sports management club, and National Society for Leadership and Success. I’ve received a DMACC foundation scholarship, and I’ve been selected as PTK chapter officer. I’ve made the presidents list for every semester. My favorite quote is you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. This speaks to me because it demonstrates how showing up and working hard can propel you to succeed in life. A huge thanks to Dr. Woods for helping me learn and grow throughout my time at DMACC!

Maša Pilčević was born and raised in Niš, Serbia, a city tucked away in the mountains of Eastern Europe. She excelled academically from a young age, finding her niche in physics and placing first in Concours la Main à la Plat, a national renewable energy contest published by the French Embassy of Serbia, and third in the NASA International Asteroid Search. At Gymnasium Bora Stanković, a US college-preparatory equivalent, she earned the competitive FLEX scholarship in her sophomore year — an opportunity of a lifetime that allowed her to study in the US as a foreign exchange student. Pilčević later returned to the US for college, studying marketing at Des Moines Area Community College. She is expecting to graduate from DMACC this May and transfer to Grand Canyon University for a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Advertising. She has been recognized on the President's List and has held both Chapter and Regional Officer roles while interning with DMACC’s Marketing & PR office. "I want to thank my family back home for relentlessly supporting me and always believing in my dreams. I also want to thank my second family, my American family, whom I'm forever grateful to for welcoming me into their home as one of their own. I wouldn’t be here without their combined efforts — there are no words in either the English or the Serbian language that can express my gratitude for the life I was given.”

I plan to transfer to Iowa State University after receiving my Associate’s through DMACC. While there I intend to earn my Bachelor’s in Anthropology and go onto further my education and hopefully one day earn my PhD. As my sister and I have a bet on who will get theirs first. My current career goals are to become an Archaeologist and/or go into museum curation; I want to specifically study ancient hominids and their behaviors. While I do not participate in many DMACC events due to work, I enjoy independently studying or reading at the Newton Campus when I have the time. While at DMACC, I have earned a DMACC Foundation Scholarship and was on the Dean's List Fall of 2025. One interesting thing about me is that I enjoy the arts. I paint, draw, and occasionally write. I also enjoy visiting museums and art galleries, especially with my partner Elijah. Additionally, I have been dabbling in photography since I was a young boy, largely capturing nature and landscapes. Art makes me feel connected to the world around me and other people's perspectives in it. An expression of the human experience. Art is what connects us all.

In August 2026, I will transfer to ISU and major in hospitality management. In the future, I hope to work at a high-end restaurant or open my own restaurant. I love the restaurant industry and learning how to curate an atmosphere that contributes to the best guest experience. Going to school at DMACC as a full-time student has allowed me the flexibility to work full-time as a manager for a catering company. Without the support system and small-school atmosphere that DMACC provides, I wouldn't have had that opportunity and wouldn’t have been on the trajectory to hospitality that I currently am. I have completed the Honors program as well as had involvement in campus PTK events. In the 5 semesters I have taken DMACC courses, I have earned a spot on the President’s List for 3 semesters and Dean’s List for 2 semesters. I have also received a Foundation scholarship every year. A quote I have been living by through my time at DMACC is “leave a space better than you found it.” This is one I still have to keep practicing every day, but I have found that striving to leave a meaningful impact on a project and finding success in that is one of the most rewarding feelings for me. No matter what your situation is, you always have the opportunity to leave things better than you found it.

Northeast Iowa Community College logoHannah Schlueter

Whether behind a camera or beside a field recorder, my goal is to embrace the opportunities that emerge. I plan to produce media that’s not just a version of reality, but that also conveys a core truth of reality. While at DMACC, I’ve had the opportunity to direct short films, collaborate with others during the DFI fashion show, and learn practical advice from people who were kind enough to share it. I have also been included on the President’s List and received the Chime Workforce Scholarship during my time at DMACC. Going into video production naturally fell into place. My love of writing, photography, and music are able to come together in a cohesive way. I’ve learned that media production is more like innovation- see what already exists, then introduce something new. As I continue on in life, I aim to live by this quote: “Walk in wisdom, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer each person.”

I will be attending Iowa State University this fall, going in as a freshmen, where I’ll be majoring in Chemical Engineering. My career goals are to work in a field targeting innovation and sustainability, preferably with recyclables. While at DMACC, I became the Vice President of the Tau Phi PTK Chapter, and paired up with the InMyBoots Program to help raise funds and organize their annual 5k. Since I’m still a senior in high school, I’m also the Service Project Coordinator for Boone High Schools National Honor Society Chapter, a tutor, a band section leader, a member of TSA, and a member of the Boone High School Leadership Group. Honors I’ve received at DMACC include the President and Deans List, and at my high school I’ve received two Department awards: one for Science and one for Spanish. I obtained three varsity letters in Football throughout my high school career, and four varsity letters in Band. My journey through DMACC wasn’t always the easiest. Sitting in a psychology class full of twenty year olds as a 15 year old high school sophomore was very intimidating. But the main thing I learned at DMACC, is that its all about your mindset to a situation.“Whether you think that you can, or you think that you can’t, you’re right.” That quote helped me through the long nights until three or four in the morning, and the times I wanted to give up at football practice. Your mindset to anything is the most important thing.

I plan to attend Iowa State University in the fall of 2026, where I intend to major in marketing with an interest in merchandising and brand strategy. My long term career goal is to work in a marketing-related role where I can combine creativity, consumer behavior analysis, and strategic communication to help businesses grow and connect. While completing my studies at DMACC, I have demonstrated strong academic commitment and consistency. I have earned placement on the Dean's list three times: Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Fall 2025. At the same time, I am completing my Associate of Arts degree while still enrolled as a senior at Boone High School, allowing me to challenge myself academically and prepare early. In addition to academics, I have been actively involved in athletics. I played tennis for the Boone High School Girls Tennis team all four years and helped lead the team to the state tournament during my senior year this fall. This experience strengthened my teamwork, leadership, and time management skills, all of which I carry into my academic and professional goals. A fun fact about me is that I love to laugh and have fun. I have been voted best "Class Clown" out of my entire grade for both my sophomore and junior years of high school. Hopefully will get it for my senior year as well!

Northeast Iowa Community College logoKenneth Yanqui

My name is Kenneth Yanqui, I was born in New York City but raised in West Des Moines Iowa, and I’m a first-year transfer student here at DMACC. I plan to transfer from DMACC to the University of Iowa’s College of Pharmacy to pursue a PharmD degree. I plan to excel in all four years of the program and graduate on time. Afterwards, my goal would be to find and get a job in a large hospital as an oncology pharmacist. I would most likely be working in a northeastern city like Philadelphia or New York City, where I would stay and live in for a couple of years. Some activities I’ve participated in while at DMACC are volunteering at Meals from the Heartland with PTK, working part time as a Fitness Attendant at Trail Point Aquatics and Fitness, and taking care of my little brother at home. Throughout my DMACC journey, I’ve received several scholarships such as the DMACC Foundation Scholarship and the Ankeny Campus Scholarship. One of my favorite quotes I live by goes like this, “What do you do when you feel like you can’t do anything, but there’s also nothing you can really do? Well, you do what you can, and you do it well” – anonymous.

Northeast Iowa Community College logoNyKole Clay

My name is Nykole Clay, and I am a radiologic technology student from southeast Iowa. My journey has been shaped by resilience, perseverance, and my commitment to growth. After graduating high school in 2012, I entered adulthood without clear direction. With time, experience, and many responsibilities, my priorities changed drastically. My son is my primary motivation to build a stable life, both emotionally and financially, while pursuing a career that fosters continuous learning and professional development. While working for Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services, I was inspired by individuals overcoming significant obstacles to achieve their goals. Witnessing their determination helped me realize I didn't have to remain in survival mode. I could pursue a purpose-driven future. This insight led me to radiologic sciences, where I immediately felt at home. Seeing an X-ray for the first time, I was in complete awe. This feeling deepened during my exposure to surgical imaging, where I saw the vital role radiologic technologists play in the operating room, earning respect through expertise and teamwork. I thrive in both classroom and clinical settings, where hands-on learning and patient interaction energize me. My interests include surgical radiography, interventional procedures, and advanced modalities like MRI, with long-term goals of earning multiple certifications. Grounded in authenticity and a love for learning, I am committed to a future in medical imaging where I serve patients with skill and compassion, while building a better life for my family.

To say becoming a nurse has always the end goal for me, would be putting it lightly. Taking care of others has always been my passion, from helping my mom be a caretaker for both of my grandparents at the age of 10, to becoming a CNA when I turned 18. I have always been able to find joy in helping, even if it was in ways that seemed inconsequential. My heart and soul feel the need to touch others and to be there in times where/when no one else can or would. Caring for people who have lost hope for the future. Being a friend, a confident, a family member, and an advocate. This is what I hope to dedicate my life to.

“To do what nobody else will do, in a way nobody else can, in spite of all we go through… that is what makes a nurse.” -Rawsi Williams

Northeast Iowa Community College logoCassie Ryken

I am a wife, a proud mom of three healthy and happy boys, and at 39 years old, I am finally living out a dream that once felt out of reach. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a nurse. Life, however, took me down a different path. I earned a business degree and spent my professional career working in accounting, valuable and rewarding work, but my heart wanted more. For years, I believed pursuing nursing was no longer possible. Balancing family, career, and education felt overwhelming, especially as a full-time mother. That belief changed when I found Indian Hills Community College. The support, structure, and encouragement of the program made the transition to being a full-time student and full-time mom not only manageable, but empowering. The commitment, discipline, and academic challenges from nursing school have truly made a stronger person. I am constantly amazed by the dedication of my instructors and classmates and the passion that drives this program. This journey would not be possible without my incredible support system. I am endlessly grateful to my husband for the countless evenings he stepped up, cooking dinner, running kids to activities, and holding everything together when my time was stretched thin. I also thank my boys for their patience, grace, and understanding throughout this process, and my mom for stepping in to help with childcare whenever the gaps need to be filled. This dream is becoming a reality because of them.
